Advancing the Conversation of Jesus

Early in their time together, Jesus sent out his disciples with power to heal all kinds of diseases and proclaim the good news of the Kingdom. He did this even before they had come to fully know and believe in him. They certainly believed in him enough to follow him, but they didn’t know much

After their healing tour, which must have been an amazing experience for each of them, they participated with Jesus in feeding over 5000 people. Feeding 5000 is one thing, but Jesus produced enough food to feed the multitude from a kid’s sack-lunch of 5 barley loaves of bread and 2 fish! I’m sure each of the disciples had some stories to tell about this experience!

NOTE three clashes that happened, after seeing and experiencing these off-the-chart miracles with Jesus. FIRST: A clash between one anotherAn argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For whoever is least among you all is the greatest.” (Luke 9:46-48)

Why is this argument happening between the disciples about who is the greatest among them?

SECOND: A clash between the disciples and other believers“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” (Luke 9: 49-50)

Have you ever heard anyone or been the one who rejected someone else who was not in your group of believers?

THIRD: A clash between the disciples and non-followers. James and John returned from Samaria, where they weren’t treated well. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. (Luke 9:52-55)

James and John didn’t say, “Jesus, why don’t you call down fire from heaven to destroy them.” They are saying, “Jesus, do you want us to call down fire from heaven?”

The problem at the core of every clash is the same thing. JESUS IS MISSING! Even though you’ve decided to follow Jesus in this transformational lifestyle, living out this transformed life is so daily. Don’t leave Jesus behind in the process, believing that you don’t need his presence and direction any longer. This is why it’s so important that you continue the discipleship process in a small group. Jesus is THE WAY; learn to act like it daily!
