Advancing the Conversation of Jesus
In 1948 Douglas Hyde resigned as the news editor of the London Daily Worker and wrote the end to 20 years of his life as a member of the Communist Party. A week later Hyde announced that he had renounced Communism and was joining the Catholic Church. Later in 1966, he wrote a classic book, DEDICATION AND LEADERSHIP, outlining the methodology of leadership development, stolen from the methods of Jesus with his early disciples. This book awakened me to this powerful and practical methodology of Jesus and I had the privilege of using these principles in developing disciples of Jesus within the university world of students. I learned the most while working at Southern Methodist University with hundreds of dedicated young leaders in the Christian context.
Tamrat used these same principles to build an army of over 150,000 disciples of communism with great success to overthrow the largest army in all of Africa. Later in political prison, Jesus found Tamrat and recruited him to be a follower.
The small group dynamic works powerfully, whether in the hands of the Communists, Nazis, Al Qaida or the Islamic State. Here’s the difference. In the hands of Jesus the small group is not just a powerful dynamic, but is transformational for you and for those you touch.
Paul speaks of this transformational dynamic in his letter to the followers of Jesus in Colossae. He says in Colossians 3:12-17: So, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
After Paul describes the general harmonious dynamics of gathering together, he shares what each individual brings to the group. Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Each group member must come with the attitude of allowing and inviting the peace of God to be the “umpire” of his/her heart, so each person is led by peace.
Then, he opens the practical, supernatural power of the transformational process within the group. Let the word of the Messiah richly dwell within you, (or, richly make itself at home among y’all, not just within you.) with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymnsand spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. As each person shares a thought or song, Jesus will touch each person according to the needs. This is the supernatural power of the transformation that only Jesus can and will do in all who gather together. This is the supernatural dynamic of THE WAY Jesus curriculum!
