GOT A MINUTE? After Jesus made it clear that his primary, universal command to his followers is to make disciples of all nations, his 11 disciples seem to have become stuck in their ways and immovable, refusing to follow Jesus’ command. About 15 years after Jesus delivered this command, that’s 15 years, Peter was sent to the house of Cornelius, a God-fearing Gentile. Peter proves he’s still stuck in his cultural, holy huddle as he entered the house, he said, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.” Then, Peter came to his senses after entering the house full of Gentiles:“I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.” (Acts 10)
After hearing of obvious breakouts among the Gentiles who were following Jesus without their help or approval, the 11 disciples convened the Council of Jerusalem to decide what to do with them. They had been ignoring and resisting Jesus’ command to ‘make disciples of all nations’ for nearly 25 years. So, in 50 A.D. they finally determined that the Gentiles didn’t have to become Jewish to follow Jesus. They missed Jesus’ intent for 25 years; I never awakened to follow Jesus’ commands (actually and daily), until I was 58 years old. What’s it going to take to wake you up to follow in the steps of Jesus?
