GOT A MINUTE?

A couple of days ago, I posted a favorite C.S. Lewis quote on Instagram (timtimmons1): “I WANT GOD, NOT MY IDEA OF GOD.” I’ve often said that it is nearly impossible to follow God. Our personal and cultural ideas become our filters that shape our ideas about God. This is why there are man-made gods in existence throughout the world. God becomes whatever one can imagine or dream or hope for. There are moon gods, corn gods, rain gods, war gods, denominational gods, ad nausea.

This is precisely why God sent Jesus! His birth was intended that the God of gods would take on flesh, so that mankind is able to follow and imitate God. This is why he was given the name Immanuel, meaning “God with us”.

John articulates this phenomenon well: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being…. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace  and truth.(John 1)

What is really needed is a genuine change of heart-to see your personal life, predicaments, and people differently. Several years ago, we set out to study only the five Gospels for three years-Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts. We did this in order to get to know this Jesus. This focus proved to be life changing! It was through this Jesus journey that we discovered what only Jesus could do for us that we cannot do for ourselves. I have no capability to change a person’s heart. I can’t give people peace. I can’t give people joy. I can’t give them love, forgiveness, or freedom. I can’t, but I’ve come to realize that Jesus can! You can experience it all through Jesus.
