There is a relational context Jesus wants with his followers. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:12-15)
Jesus wants to be in relationship with you…in sync. Being in sync implies a personal, loving relationship that desires to talk and listen to him, as well as please him. This is the essence of the friendship that Jesus wants with his community of followers.
So, Jesus is our primary “Paraclete”, the one walks alongside us to help. Now, Jesus says, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever. The Spirit of truth will abide with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)
FIRST: Jesus promises another helper, another “Paraclete”, which is one who is called alongside to help. This 2nd Paraclete has the capability and adaptability for giving aid as needed. Jesus identifies this 2nd Paraclete as “another” comforter, which means another of the same sort as Jesus and not different from Jesus. Jesus goes on to identify this Paraclete or helper as the Spirit of truth twice and then reveals him as the Holy Spirit.
SECOND: This new Helper, the Holy Spirit, will be with Jesus’ disciples forever! The presence of Jesus can be a reality forever. Now, that’s a long time. This is how Jesus could promise his disciples that he would be with them, until the end of time. The presence of Jesus will continue with the followers of Jesus forever through the Spirit!
THIRD: The Spirit will not only be with you; he will be in you. Now, here may be the most important part of the presence of Jesus through the Spirit in the lives of his followers. The Holy Spirit will permanently indwell each genuine follower of Jesus. This means we don’t need to ask the Spirit to be with us. We don’t need to invite the Spirit into our lives, our meetings, and our pain. Jesus is already with us and is in us through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Just before Jesus departed from his disciples, he gave them the assurance that they would still be able to experience his presence within their community and on their walk together, following in his steps. This is the answer to how the followers of Jesus will be able to continue practicing the works of Jesus, acting Jesus out in the world AND even do greater things! With the presence of Jesus living inside all who are his followers, it’s no wonder the Jesus movement is the largest ever in the world!
As followers of Jesus, our challenge is to stop praying for Jesus and his Spirit to show up among us and start practicing his presence everywhere we go!
