Get your Daily Encouragement with the Jesus Minute
We’ve covered the first five transformational action-steps Peter sets forth in the first chapter of his second letter:
TRUST IN JESUS-Faith!
TAKE A STAND TO ACT LIKE IT-Virtue!
GRASP JESUS AS YOUR OWN-Knowledge!
EXERCISE INNER STRENGTH-Self-control!
We come now to the 6th action-step: GODLINESS. Godliness is an awesome respect for God, a devoutness, and piety. The word encompasses a lot; I want to highlight two aspects of godliness and then the action-step will emerge.
First: A healthy fear of God. When I hear anyone glibly denigrating the awesomeness of God, my entire body flinches. Since many of our religious institutions have little credibility in speaking to our society and therefore are easily replaced by the religion of secularism, there is no adequate sense of experiencing God in our daily lives. Without the reality of experiencing the God who is there in a personal way, we tend to act like practical atheists, as if God is not there at all and certainly doesn’t matter. So, the most popular beliefs are easily accepted. Since God is not in control, then mankind must be in control of everything-the rise and fall of political powers, the weather, and the survival of our planet. You want to know how to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans and how you’ll take it from here.
Second: A devotional life. This is the kind of godliness that comes from disciplining yourself to reflect the character and behavior that is appropriate in response to the awesome God of gods. I think this is the action-step we’re looking for. It’s REFLECT GOD IN YOUR LIFESTYLE.
NOTE the progression so far. You begin with your faith, add virtue, knowledge, and self-control. Now, once you think you have a sense of self-control or self-strength and at that moment you can become overwhelmed with the waves and storms of life. This is when you need a significant back-up stance-perseverance. All you can do at this point is to hang in there and get through it all.
After you get through the fiery trials that have been thrown at you, you will discover that there is a wonderful result. You will find new character qualities of godliness, because you persevered and got through it. So, now add a growing reflection of God in your lifestyle! This will add to your maturity and show God off to the world!
