The first action-step is that you TRUST Jesus with your whole life. All of the next 7 action-steps are to be added to your personal trust in Jesus. The second action-step and the first to be added to your faith is VIRTUE. Virtue is a tough word to understand. It’s identified as moral excellence and goodness. Virtue has the sense of standing tall, a certain “manliness” and moral strength. It seems to me that the best way to articulate this action-step is to declare yourself-to stand on your own two feet. You trust Jesus, now you add your personal commitment to act like it. So, the action-step is to take a stand that you intend to act out your faith-your trust. It’s not taking a stand against anything, but taking a stand for living out your personal trust in Jesus. You declare that you trust Jesus; now you’re going to act like it!
Virtue has to do with having an uncommon character that is worthy of admiration. It’s to be an exemplary character, embracing the character of Jesus in this fully corrupt world. To declare your commitment to walk in the steps of Jesus has a certain social dimension to it, as you do your best to live between two kingdoms. You are called to be the highest moral standard of consistency, in line with your faith-your trust in Jesus. This is true character!
Followers of Jesus are urged to: apply all diligence; in your faith supply moral excellence. First, you are to be diligent in adding these practices to your faith. Who is responsible for adding these to your faith? Are you to pray for them to be added? No! You are to be diligent in adding these practices to your faith! You are not only to add these practices to your faith; you are to supply these to your faith. YOU DO IT! The term ‘supply’ means to fully supply, lavishly supply, even better than you did last year. This term is used of a citizen within a Greek city-state. Different citizens were asked to fully underwrite-to lavishly supply-a major city-state event. And, do it better than last year! YOU DO IT!
As a follower of Jesus, you are deemed able enough to fully supply each of these practices to your faith-your trust in Jesus. This reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 5, where Jesus empowers his followers by saying, “You are the salt of the earth” that must be sensed and “You are the light of the world” that must be seen! And, Jesus isn’t hoping you will become the salt of the earth or the light of the world. He confidently says that YOU ARE! So, DO IT! Be salt and light. Take a stand on your own two feet as you declare yourself a committed follower of Jesus!
